FM Daniel Fernandez - 2nd and getting his hard earned 3rd and final IM norm

Ankit Rajpara - 3rd and also very grateful for getting his 3rd IM norm too. He is now in Petaling Street celebrating (if he had not won his last round he would be in the room sulking :) )

Thakur Akhur - 4th and the third person obtaining IM norm from the tournament(it is also his 3rd IM norm). He had a winning position against the GM but blundered a whole piece in the ending.

Abdul Haq was the busiest of the players as he also played a major role as organiser to ensure players were taken care of, arrangement of playing venue, food, etc. An incredible job by Haq.

NIcholas Chan seemed to play like a different person after the KL Open and was totally off form. He picked up towards the end of the tournament by beating Ankit and almost ending Daniel Fernandez norm chances in the last round.

Tirto suffered from gout and it looks like his game suffered too one win 3 draws and 5 losses.

Nirav Y Rajasuba whose secondary job is coaching and Ankit was once his student.

Nicholas miscalculated in a winning position and lost his queen.

This gives Daniel Fernandez 7 points, half a point more than the IM norm requirements.

This means all three IM hopefuls completed all the 3 required norms.

Abdul Haq did not survive Thakur’s Kingside attack beginning with e6 pawn sacrifice followed shortly with a brilliant Bishop sacrifice on move 15.

He needed a win for an IM norm and he got the win! Ankit Rajpara of India scores a win as white vs IM Situru Nathaniel. It's the first game that concluded out of the 5 boards currently being played in the UKM KL Masters 2010.

Ankit outplayed Situru on the White side of the Sicilian c3, an opening which he is quite familiar with.

Thakur Akash is at 5½ and needs a win vs Abdul Haq.

Ankit Rajpura suffered his first loss to Nicholas Chan yesterday and also needs a win against IM Situru Nathanael to reach 6½.

Round 7: Haq beats Situru

First game that concludes for Round 7 is at board 1 where Abdul Haq beat IM Situru Nathaniel. Haq's two connected passed pawn proved too much for Situru's Rook and Knight to handle. In the end, Haq sacrificed the exchange to ensure at least one for pawns would queen which promptly forced Situru’s resignation..

Today’s round starts early at 8.30am. Clocks are started on time and GM Saidali, Ankit and Rajasuba arrive at the same time, just one minute late. Daniel ,Nicholas, Thakur and Sithuru are already at sitting at their seats ready to start.

Daniel already thinking hard against the GM.

An hour later Tirto arrives barefoot, walking to his seat slowly. His still has problems with his leg.

All attention to Tirto as he slowly makes his way to his seat.

He starts his game immediately vs Ankit. Tirto’s clock show him having less than 30 minutes to complete the game.

Round 6 overview

This morning I was a 5 minutes late after finishing my "pictorial" crosstable program.

The tournament hall is a 5 minute walk from the hostel. I got to walk with Situru who just got out of his room at the same time. Tirto was ahead of us but was walking very slowly. Now I know the reason for him being 30 minutes late yesterday. His leg was hurting somehow.

We got to the tournament hall just in time to see the players start the chess clock.

FM Nicholas Chan vs IM Situru Nathaniel. Nicholas really needs this win against Situru but that was not to be. Instead Nicholas miscalculated in the middlegame to lose a piece and the game. This must be Nicholas’ worst tournament and his loss leaves him at the bottom of the table.

FM Daniel Fernandez is a picture of concentration against Nirav Rajasuba. Daniel outplayed his opponent in agressive black side of the Sicilian dragon to secure the point.

Thakur Akash had to wait for Tirto who was again 30 minutes late. Their game went into a Bishop vs Knight endgame where Thakur had the Knight with an extra pawn. Tirto was outplayed and it proved the Knight was superior and Tirto had to admit defeat when another one of his pawns was about to fall.

16 year old Ankit of India waits patiently for GM Saidali who will be a few minutes late.

The GM arrives soon after and has a cup of tea while playing the first few moves. It’s another Sicilian dragon and Ankit manages to equalise the game quite fast. He offers a draw in the middlegame which GM Saidali refused. However, a couple of moves later the draw was agreed. Saidali still remains the clear leader but only by half a point closely followed by Daniel and Ankit.

The longest game of the day was between Abdul Haq vs Brunei’s FM Yee Soon Wei. Haq had the advantage for a long time but in the endgame made some mistakes and Yee soon had an extra pawn in a Rook and pawn endgame. The endgame look drawish but Yee kept pressing with both clocks at about 3 minutes each. With increment that endgame stretched over half an hour. In the end the game was agreed drawn at 99 moves.

There are no rest days at the UTM KL Masters but today there is only one round so the rest of the afternoon the players are free.

Abdul Haq took the opportunity to arrange a bus for the players and off the players and arbiters went for a sight seeing tour around Putrajaya.

Roslina brought along WIM Nafisa Muminova for the outing and I took the opportunity to take a picture with her. I missed the chance to take a picture with any of the chess players during the KL Open. At least I have one now.

Ankit from India commented that he had delicious ice cream at the shopping complex. (Mc Donalds – chocolate twist cone)

A nice outing as it certainly good to take the mind off the routine of round robin chess for half a day. I don’t know about the players but I for one feel refreshed. Also, it was good to have some time to actually talk to some of the players.

Round 2 featured game: Blitz to death

The following game is between Niraj Rajasuba vs FM Nicholas Chan. Nicholas used so little time on the clock that Niraj fell into time pressure at around move 30 onwards. Nicholas had 46 minutes vs Niraj’s 1 minute plus in the following position.(at move 39).

Nicholas eventual King side pawn advanced was too much for Niraj to handle and White capitulated at move 45.

Not a good start to FM Nicholas Chan’s chances for an IM norm after an early defeat to Brunei FM Yee Soon Wei. Nicholas blundered with 33. Qxa4 failing to see black’s next move that won him two critical pawns. The game was lost soon after.

Round 1 featured game: IM Sithuru Nathaniel vs FM Daniel Fernandez

FM Daniel Fernandez fresh from his impressive performance at the Sidney International Open started confidently enough with a draw against IM Sithuru Nathaniel. Sithuru playing White, opened with a provocative 2. h4 in response to Daniel’s Modern defence. Daniel kept his cool and steered the game into calm waters.

Major exchanges led the game into a R+B+3P ending with the Bishop being opposite colours. Sithuru managed to exchange off the opposite colour Bishop and even won an extra pawn in the process. However the resulting Rook and pawn endgame was drawish. The game ended in a draw shortly.

UKM KL Masters: First round Malaysian casualties

GM Saidali, playing White, won Abdul Haq in a Petroff while Nicholas taking White was beaten by Brunei FM Yee Soon Wei. Indonesian IM Nathaniel Situru could not convert his extra pawn in a Rook plus Pawn ending against Singaporean FM Daniel Fernandez and the game ended in a draw. Thakur Akash vs Ankit R Rajpara also ended in a draw.

One more game still ongoing is between Tirto and Nirav Y Rajasuba.
